The Gel Lab Shred Sessions / Shark's Log – 170710

Skateboarding has been the focus of my life for the last decade. Whether it was playing an active role as a photographer/writer contributing "content" to the hype machine or being the eye candy in front of the lens, I've managed to carve out a double existence within this small humble realm, and there is not a day that goes by that I don't acknowledge the fact that I've been extremely fortunate to have been able to live such a life. With that said, if there is one thing you realize through all of this, it's that stagnation is the swan song to our industry. The moment we accept complacency within our spectrum, is the moment when everything begins to unravel.

Let explain a little bit of what I'm on about... Our little slice of the world that is incline-oriented skateboarding exists primarily because we created an alternative to the norm of what we all as a society acknowledge as skateboarding. We've forged a world that centers specifically around exploring the relationship between gravity and the skateboard, and who could have known that they'd spawn such a wonderfully awe-inspiring state of earth-surfing bliss? Alas, it was our curiosity that conjured such a glorious thing, our unrelenting lust for innovation that created this alternative realm of skateboarding that we so happily reside within. And it is that same mentality we must acknowledge if we are to preserve this industry, keep it from slowly eroding away, maintain its joyous feeling of speed-induced freedom from the shackles of the banality of life.

How do we do it? How do we as a community come together and continue to breathe life into the discipline itself when it seems that now more than ever we as a community are a bit out of breath... I like to think the answer lies in diligence. A diligence towards wanting to be different, a diligence towards forging a new market, creating the change we've always wanted to see. Skateboarding is a beautiful thing because it comes with a tremendously high cost, demands everything from you, then often leaves you broken and penniless. However, the spoils of a good day spent skating with your mates can not fully be encompassed by the written word. It is a joy that cannot entirely be explained, but despite all the tribulations tied to it, is entirely worth everything.

This is why we need to be better, need to work harder, strive more, innovate, skate differently, explore new correlations, new styles, new shapes, new designs. WE have to be the ones that shapes the way this industry continues to develop, because anything less, and it all slowly begins to fall apart... It is then, as the saying goes, "a rising tide, raises all ships".

Thank's for reading, now go skate, and be different.
