    DockSession May

This couple of weeks have been very fun for DockSessionLA. We been having a strong attendance at our Franklin slide sessions and that makes us smile. Teaching people how to slide is always a good time.

The Gel Lab Shred Sessions / Shark’s Log – 170525

I don’t feel like any of us really chooses to stop skateboarding; life just prioritizes it out. That’s a weighty opening statement, I know, but for each and every one of us, eventually there will come a time where you will be forced to make a choice: maybe not one big sudden decision, but a series of smaller decisions that overall limits the actual activity of skateboarding.

Loaded Labs Interview with Longboard Envy

We recently had the chance to chat with the folks at Longboard Envy about the Loaded Labs Menopause project. Check out their introduction below, and be sure to read the full interview here!

"Product research and development has usually been a highly secretive thing—companies would produce prototypes within their factories, and only reveal the products to inside members. This is a totally founded strategy—many products, in the early days of the development, are flawed and can tarnish the reputation of a company if revealed to the mass public. Sometimes, prototypes are released to the public in the last few months of development, but this is mostly as a marketing strategy and hype-building exercise. That means that realistically speaking, the consumers don’t have a direct influence on an end product.

Many of us dream to partake in this secret research and development that happens behind the scenes at many skateboard companies- I know that when I was a wee little grom, I slobbered at the thought of being let in on company secrets. If only companies would tell us what happens in their secret Area 51 warehouses…

    Oh wait, Loaded does."

    DockSessionUSA April-May

This past 4 weeks have been really fun and interesting for DockSession. We made the transition from parking lots games to skating a hill and giving people pointers on how to slide. "Franklin" has been the home of fun sessions for more than 10 years now, it got repaved and pavement was little rough for a while. Now it's perfect.

The Gel Lab Shred Sessions / Shark’s log – 170503

The Gel Lab sessions are just shy of almost a decade old. That’s almost ten solid years of skateboarding on Wednesday nights with good friends and in good company. I won’t lie, we’ve lost a few people along the way, and I mean that both metaphorically and physically. Life runs its course, and just like the cycle of the seasons, faces come and go. With that being said, I’ve also come to know that some of The Gel Lab session’s longest running attendees have had their stints of disconnection as well. Sometimes even the most fervent session goers just need to ghost out for awhile. However, for me, the greatest gratification is seeing some of those long lost faces re-emerge from the abyss of obscurity. I assume the reconnection stands to represent a bit of a revival of sorts, a re-association with something that made you feel good about yourself.

    DockSessionUSA April 9th & 16th

This past couple of sessions have been amazing. Witnessing the gradual growth of DockSessionUSA and seeing new faces as well as recognizing "the usuals" from week to week always puts a smile on my face.

The Gel Lab Shred Sessions / Shark’s log – 170329

Some weeks had passed since we had been back to our beloved DTLA garage of garages. I had personally spent time casing the garage during the weeks of our absence, memorizing security patterns, making sure that IF we were to return to our weekly routine, things would be relatively “stress” free. I’ll admit, I wasn’t quite sure how things would turn out. The security had been staying later and later, which in corporate terms means that someone had to make a decision in a meeting to keep these guards hanging out longer, thus costing them more in the process. So the fact that our presence had become enough of a concern for them to start having their lackeys hang around later was reason enough for us to stay away.

    DockSession USA: March 19 & 26

It's been one solid month of DockSession USA events here in Los Angeles, and we couldn't be more proud of the turnout and the incredible positivity of the skaters that have gathered for each session!

The Gel Lab Shred Sessions / Shark's log - 170323

With almost a decade of weekly Wednesday sessions under my belt I had known for awhile it was time we added a new location to the rotation. Downtown Los Angeles has been such a wonderful sanctuary to us for almost the better part of 3 years, but it needed a break. Security guards were starting to recognize specific skaters, and their shifts seemed to be running later and later. So I decided to tour us around for a bit, as I do when I feel one spot is getting too much heat. This particular week, Ojoom Pucks' John Baelly suggested we check out a new location. Nestled deep into the hills of Elysian Park, this absolutely peach of a free-ride hill immediately brought back memories of the golden age of Parkway Calabasas (for veterans of The Gel Lab sessions, they’ll remember just how glorious the incline of Parkway really was). This new hill however; is well lit at night, secluded, the pavement is smooth with zero cracks, and the grade is steep enough and long enough for both the seasoned freerider as well as the novice looking to step up their game. It is my hope, that this new location will play host to a new rise in freeriding talent from the greater Los Angeles area, as attendees of future Gel Lab sessions can expect to see this location in the mix a lot more often!

    DockSession USA: March 5 & 12

    Santa Monica: March 5 & 12, 2017

Coming from a tight skate community back in Bogotá, Colombia, I missed having an environment where people could be comfortable having different skill levels and learn from each other when it comes to skateboarding. The DockSession jams (originally created by Lotfi Lamaali in Paris, France) have always intrigued me, and I'm stoked on the opportunity to help build that community here in Los Angeles.
